October 21, 2023I have never used a free forum hosting service. I am a member of a lot of free-hosted forums but I do not own any free-hosted forums. As a user of free hosted forums, one of the major drawbacks I see is ads. You don’t earn from these ads but these ads are there. I think a better option would be open source software. I am running multiple forums on open source platforms and I am thinking to upgrade to premioum software one of these days.

October 21, 2023I disagree that a paid platform is always less nice to look at. In fact, the looks of even non-paid stuff can look wonderful and paid setups can look bland depending on what a certain admin does. Anyway, looks is subjective anyway.
Another thing to mention is the DIY nature of a lot of free software. I mean, for instance, if you are into enough DIY, there’s no reason why your MyBB or SMF setup can’t look as good as something from XenForo. However, though, there’s a good chance it would take a lot of extra work.

October 22, 2023I would definitely recommend going paid. Xenforo and Invision Community Suite being the two I’d recommend for any serious forum owner. It just depends on your budget IMO or what your needs for your site are. Both can get very expensive but if you have the funds and need all the bells and whistles that ICS offers then I would say ICS5 is looking to be really nice. However, Xenforo 3.0 is right around the corner as well.

I’m not saying they are completely useless but they won’t give you the best service if you plan on running a long term project with your forum.
